Studying the social and behavioral dynamics of young boys facing challenges related to self-control, aggravation, and aggression.

UnTilted was in production for over 2 years before I came on board as the Lead UX Designer. The game lacked the tension and conflict needed to be created between the boys, as well as overall game clarity and player communication issues.

Here's what you can expect from me with in-progress deliverables for feedback:

One of the biggest challenges (and the most fun!) for this project was designing an iPad game meant to be laid flat on the table, with both players positioned opposite each other.

I had to ensure that elements were readable from each player’s perspective to foster a sense of ownership, while also creating opportunities for collaboration and shared screen interaction. Definitely not your typical 2v2 player game!

Less is more.

Before

After

PROBLEM

  • Too much information to digest in a single screen

  • Text is way too illegible even on an iPad

  • Awkward moments of not knowing who should press the next button

  • Tutorial lanes are not in the same direction as the main Battle board

  • Player names and hex logos take up a lot of real estate

Before

After

SOLUTION

  • Simplifying the Level cards to have non-redundant information, while teaching the players to look at things collaboratively together

  • Mirroring both the Level Select screen and Drag Tutorial to match the Battle board castles and lanes

  • β€œReady” buttons on each side, to prevent one player from tapping and skipping through before the other player is ready to move forward

Play with my prototype!

PLEASE NOTE:

This was a low-budget research project, and none of this represents final art or the level of polish we would aim for with more funding.

Our main goals for the research project are:

  1. Clarity.

  2. Teach young adolescents how to control their emotions.

  3. Make the game fun and engaging!

β€œThe boys are bouncing off the walls with excitement!”

The Pilot Study began on March 4, 2024, featuring an ongoing weekly tournament spanning 6 weeks. There has been significant excitement around the school, with even parents expressing enthusiasm!

The team and I take pride in the game overhaul and changes we implemented in such a short timeframe. We eagerly await feedback on how these changes have impacted the children and the study.
